At Madewell Sales Store, we want you to love your purchase as much as we love curating our stylish collections. If for any reason you’re not completely satisfied, we’re happy to offer returns or exchanges within 15 days of receiving your order.

Eligibility for Returns & Exchanges

  • Items must be unworn, unwashed, and in original condition with all tags attached
  • Returns must be initiated within 15 days of delivery
  • Original proof of purchase is required
  • Underwear and swimwear (for hygiene reasons) are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged

Note: We inspect all returned items. Items showing signs of wear, damage, or missing tags may be refused or subject to a partial refund.

How to Initiate a Return or Exchange

Step 1: Submit Your Request

I would like to request a [return/exchange] for my order #[Your Order Number]. Below are the details:

  • Item(s) for return/exchange: [Product Name, Size, Color]
  • Reason for return/exchange: [Please specify]
  • Preferred resolution: [Refund to original payment method/Store credit/Exchange for [specify new item]]

Step 2: Receive Return Instructions

Within 1-2 business days, we’ll email you with:

  • Return authorization number
  • Shipping instructions and return address
  • Any special instructions for your return

Step 3: Ship Your Return

  • Pack items securely in the original packaging if possible
  • Include the original packing slip or invoice
  • Write the return authorization number on the outside of the package
  • Ship using a trackable method (we recommend insurance for valuable items)

Important: We are not responsible for items lost in transit. Please retain your shipping receipt until your return is processed.

Refund Processing

Once we receive and inspect your return:

  • Timing: Refunds are processed within 5-7 business days after we receive your return
  • Method: Refunds will be issued to your original payment method (credit card, PayPal, etc.)
  • Notification: You’ll receive an email confirmation when your refund is processed

Please note that depending on your financial institution, it may take additional time for the refund to appear on your statement.

Exchange Process

For exchanges:

  • We’ll ship your new item once we receive and process your return
  • If the new item has a higher price, you’ll need to pay the difference
  • If the new item has a lower price, we’ll refund the difference
  • Standard shipping fees apply for exchanged items

Return Shipping Costs

Customers are responsible for return shipping costs unless the return is due to our error (wrong item shipped, defective item, etc.).

For international returns (outside the U.S.), additional customs fees or taxes may apply and are the customer’s responsibility.

Damaged or Defective Items

If you receive a damaged or defective item:

  • Contact us immediately at [email protected] with photos of the damage
  • We’ll arrange for a replacement or refund at no additional cost to you
  • You may be asked to return the damaged item
